Joining the slew of cafés in the East is Laneway Market (inserts hooray)! In between Carry On Café and Do.Main Bakery, this hipster-sounding café is in fact a warm and cosy café. To me, the decor is extremely homely and unpretentious, with pretty light sources and comfortable seats. Most importantly, it boasts high amount of natural light, thanks to its ceiling-to-floor glass panels installed at the storefront. Laneway Market offers different menus for brunch and dinner, which certainly gives you an excuse to revisit at different times of the day! I was here on a Friday afternoon and it was rather empty.
Pulled Pork Burger [12-hours braised pork in beer-infused BBQ sauce, purple cabbage slaw, truffle fries, mesclun] ($19) – This is a must-try dish! Just by looking at how the mountain of pulled pork cascades down from its buns, I’m doing a happy dance inside my mind already! You’ll definitely be glad with this generous amount ‘cos it’s simply too yummy. The BBQ sauce in the pork was very apparent, a testament to the long hours of seasoning and braising. Though I can’t taste of the flavours of beer, the tender and moist pulled pork was sweeter than normal – which may be a result of the inclusion of the special ingredient. The buns were warmed and soft, a perfect marriage to the pork itself. I’ll come back here just for this!
Sous Vide Eggs [64 degrees slow-cooked eggs, sautéed mushrooms, back bacon, toast] ($15) – I must say I was a little disappointed at the portion after looking at my partner’s burger. Though promised with eggs (plural form), I was only presented with an egg (singular form). A good portion if you want to have a light lunch I suppose?
Caramel Pear Crisp [Sous vide pears tossed w oatmeal crumble & caramel drizzle, w ice cream] ($12) – Sous vide pear sounded really interesting and worth a shot… but this dish didn’t work for me unfortunately. The oatmeal crumble wasn’t the most appetising of base too.
Earl Grey Latte ($6) – I was impressed that this cuppa came with some aromatic lavender bits, that wasn’t stated on the menu. However, the latte was not as smooth as I liked it to be.
Laneway Market definitely has its hits and misses, but the hits are worth coming back for!
