Olive Tree Buffet Restaurant has been around for as long as I could remember. I was too excited to start attacking the food that I’ve missed out on taking photos of the environment. Located within Hotel Intercontinental, there is a light-well in the middle of the restaurant, with some influence of colonial times in its interior-architectural designs. If there is one buffet that is most valuable for money, it’d have to be right here, at Olive Tree. There is an irresistable 1-for-1 promotion until the end of October for buffet dinners on Mondays to Thurdays. After some calculations, that breaks down to just $32 nett per person, with unlimited servings of lobsters, crayfish, oysters and etc.!
The greens section.
Cold Starters: I especially loved the Seafood Salad which had really fresh and tender squid rings.
Chilled Seafood Section Part 1: As for the lobsters, they get snatched as soon as they were placed on the ice – well, or maybe not even (as people just grab from the chef’s tray). So, good for you if you’re seating near this ice box. Otherwise, the crayfish and prawns are just as fresh and delicious too!
Chilled Seafood Part 2: More fresh seafood to fill your tummy!
There you go – a whole plate of premium seafoods. Yes, up till this point, I still couldn’t get over how attractive the promotion was.
Live Sashimi Station
I say take lots of salmon and tuna as the swordfish was subpar.
Japanese Sushi/Soba Station which I skipped entirely to save my carbs for other dishes.
Live Beef Quesadilla Station – A chef was diligently frying and dishing out these fresh and piping hot quesadillas! I liked the taste of the minced beef but it could afford to have more cheese within.
Next to this station was the Live Drunken Prawns Station where live prawns were caught from the adjacent tank and cooked immediately in the herbal, alcohol-spiked broth. It was an enjoyable dish as the prawns could not have gotten any fresher!
Bread Station; Cheese Station; Assorted Dishes.
I was impressed by the various dishes such as Roasted Chicken with Truffle and Fish in Cream Sauce and Caviar. In most buffet restaurants, the dishes under those heavy, metal lids were more often than not, overlooked and nothing out of the blue. In the case of Olive Tree however, they were well thought out and the chefs were generous with the prized ingredients like truffle oil and caviar.
DIY Mee Siam Station
Mee Siam: This dish had a nice burst of flavours – of heat, sweetness and sourness. No doubt a local favourite, it helped to rejuvenate the tastebuds after all the heavy food items. I loved mine with lots of prawns!
Do save some space for these sweet treats as you’re in for a dessert party! From Champagne-flavoured Jellies to Osmanthus-Apricot Milk Chocolate, you’re bound to have some surprises as you trot down (with your full belly) the neat line of desserts! I really appreciate the variety of interesting chocolate flavours offered.
Fruits Cocktail, Pudding & Champagne Jelly in small and colourful containers.
Olive Tree is very serious about their chocolate!
Whole cakes cut into small rectangles for convenience.
My favourite of the plate was the Baked Hazelnut Pudding with Vanilla Sauce. This was a slice of heaven with its rich and dense cake texture and a strong chocolate-hazelnut taste (almost Nutella-like), aptly served warm. The vanilla sauce was surprisingly light and added more moisture to the cake. Visually, you could tell from the amount of vanilla pods how good it would have tasted.
Chocolate Fondue and Assorted Nonya Kuehs.
Ice Cream Station w Assorted Condiments – My favourite flavour was Black Sesame!
You’re not so done if you haven’t had their waffles. Made upon order, the waffles were piping hot, a perfect contrast to the ice cream. I wouldn’t rave about their waffles though but it was a great option to go with my ice creams.
Finally, some fresh fruits to conclude a sumptuous buffet dinner.
If you aren’t convinced after reading my post, I don’t what would. But if you are, remember to call and reserve a table for dinner as they are can get quite packed! Personally, I feel that Olive Tree had delivered not only a huge variety of delicious food but the element of trust, whereby the standards of food and choice of ingredients are neither determined nor compromised by the amount that diners are paying. I’d return to Olive Tree anytime, even after their promotion period, if you ask me.
