Koh Grill & Sushi Bar @ Wisma Food Republic

SHIOK!!! Maki they call this. This sushi roll has been plastered all over Instagram accounts, Facebook accounts etc. and I just had to go down to Wisma myself to try it. Situated beside Din Tai Fung, and sharing the vicinity with Food Republic is Koh Grill & Sushi Bar. It’s almost a restaurant by itself, with counter seats and tightly-packed tables and chairs. Do not expect service standards here to be high though as the service staff just try to get their job done as quickly as possible and be prepared to get ignored.

Now, back to SHIOK!!! Maki ($16.80)! Definitely one of the more expensive sushi rolls around, but it is well worth the money! My comment after the first bite was, “Really very shiok leh”! Chunks of charcoal-grilled eel are encased in tightly-packed rolls of sushi rice, topped with Aburi salmon, their special sauce, Mentaiko and blow-torched. If you like Sushi Tei’s Salmon Mentai sushi, this is 10 times better. Hands down. The fish slices here are so thick, they made every mouthful pleasurable. More importantly, the sauce does not steal away the distinct tastes of both salmon and eel. I finally understood what the craze was about.
Apart form Shiok!!! Maki, I’d highly recommend their Salmon Sashimi, priced at $8 for 5 slices. I would call these salmon chunks ‘cos every slice is so thick and meaty and fresh. A steal for the price you pay!
Pork Sukiyaki + Udon ($14 + $2.50) – At first glance, this didn’t appeal to me as I expected a plate of shabu-shabu pork and a pot of sukiyaki-based soup to cook my pork in. I couldn’t be more wrong. The miso-based soup was very, very hearty and delicious! As all the ingredients have been cooked together, the broth was very rich and sweet. It’s almost comfort food to me. The portion is huge (with lots of pork and vege.), so I’d say this can be shared between 2 people.
Koh Grill & Sushi Bar offers a wide selection of Yakitori items as well. Pictured above are Chicken Yakitori, Meatball Yakitori and Shishamo Yakitori; all at $2 each! Apart from the price, there’s nothing to rave about though.
Grilled Saba Fish ($9)

Koh Grill & Sushi Bar offers a large array of items on their menu and I suppose the one thing you definitely can’t go wrong with is their Shiok!!! Maki! Tried and tested – definitely worth the hype! 🙂
